This fall's movie releases are shaping up to be an awesome lineup for theaters! I kept hearing about Catfish in passing, but it wasn't until I saw this trailer that I wanted to share with fellow movie lovers. Catfish appears to start out like a simple lighthearted documentary when Nev (played by Henry Joost) wants to make an online connection in person. His friends tag along chronicling the journey which turns into something that no one could have ever expected.
The blogosphere is brimming with positive reviews after the film debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Many critics laud its clever use of technology to tell the story and its social implications. The Hollywood Reporter adds:
"Catfish" provides those fearful of new tech myriad reasons to second-guess life in the Second Life age. The filmmakers not only document the many ways services like Facebook and YouTube move the real-world action along, but they use the tools themselves as storytellers -- charting trips on Google Maps, calling upon the search giant's "street view" photographs to flesh out their detective work, and so on.
Honestly, seems like a film that might usher in a new type of film. Ed Norton (loves him!) insisted:
They have created a virtual world where you can see Nev's Apple desktop. I was hoping to get a closer look at two still later in the trailer, but the photos and videos featured provide context for our protagonist photographer."Catfish was one of the most surprising movies I have seen in a long time. The movie shifted tones 3 times, it was hilarious, then it was truly terrifying, then it was really profound and moving. That is what you aspire to do in a movie."
Catfish swims into theaters September 17th.
